Lots of connection issues with these units. August 11, 2010 J. Riga (Columbus, Ohio United States) We have lots of connection issues with our monitors. The base station sits in the nursery and constantly broadcasts audio out to the remote units, but they lose connection verrrrry easily, and in really short distances. For example, I can be in our basement with the nursery on the 3rd floor - even though the physical distance between the base and the remote is less than 50ft. When they lose connection, the remote units make an alarm sound to let you know, which is good, but it gets a bit annoying when it happens every few minutes. Can't understand in 2010 how wireless units have this poor of a range?
The good parts are that when it is working, you can talk to someone in the nursery using the remote units or just use them to talk to each other and not make any sound in the nursery. This is great, no shouting to see where someone else in the house may be. The base station has a very soft blue night light LED that glows and makes it easy to see in the nursery at night without using lots of power or being too bright for the baby. Was surprised to see that THREE A/C power adapters are included with this - so you can actually power the base station and charge all the remotes at the same time.
Overall, these are helpful if I'm not planning to travel very far from the nursery... but there's definitely no sitting on the deck or doing laundry in the basement and still continuing to monitor - these just don't have enough range.
a good monitor August 3, 2010 Kimberly Wilson (Loveland, CO) First off, I'll have to admit I did not use this as a "baby monitor", we used it to be able to hear our kids play in the basement and be able to talk to them. It's worked out just fine. I like the two way hear/talk aspect. I wish they would have had a monitor like this when my kids WERE babies...would have been nice to try to soothe from another room. I think I'll get this as a gift when I am invited to a baby shower. It's also great if you have a disabled parent/family member living with you and you need to "keep tabs" on their sleeping habits (ie: they fall...you hear it).
Very Good Quality; Just One Complaint--Battery Life July 29, 2010 Daniel N. Huse (Woodbury, MN United States) With our first child, my wife and I went through 3 different baby monitor brands before we finally found an acceptable model--a Sony that we use presently. The First Years model I am reviewing here is for our twin girls, who will be arriving soon. However, we tried out the monitor right away to ensure that it meets our expectations.
First of all, we live in a 3-story home, and our son's room is on the top floor. We wanted a monitor that would have clear reception on both of the lower floors--no crackling, static, or other annoying noises, like we have gotten with other monitors. We were very pleased to find that extraneous noises from this monitor are virtually nonexistent, which is amazing, given our past experience with baby monitors in our home. In addition to having no extraneous noises, the signal quality is remarkable. The sound coming out of the roving monitors clipped to our belts was crystal clear--as if we were standing in our son's room. Very impressive!
In addition to the #1 priority of clear reception 1 or 2 floor away, we wanted a monitor with plug-in recharge options for all 3 pieces--the stationary monitor in the nursery and the 2 roving monitors. This unit comes with all 3 plug-in options (actually, the stationary monitor is always plugged in, which is typical).
Surprisingly, we have found the communication between the roving monitors to be pretty neat. We can speak with one another in different parts of the house with these monitors. We could also speak with our son in the nursery (that is a different button than the one used to communicate between roving monitors), but that just seems too weird. We are concerned that our son would grow up thinking there are mysterious voices coming from his walls or ceiling. Therefore, we have not tried that feature. For those who want to terrorize your kids with exorcist-like ramblings, proceed at your own risk.
The only drawback we have found is the limited battery life of the roving monitors. By this, I can honestly say that the monitors would not make it through the night unplugged. We do not use the monitors at night, but we would plug them in if we did. We have found ourselves charging the roving monitors daily, due to their limited life.
In summary, these are nice baby monitors that I would recommend to any parent or prospective parent. We know from experience that there is a lot of junk out there on the market, and these are the best we have tried out of 4 total models from 4 different manufacturers.
Just what we needed, and a little more July 29, 2010 Paul Tinsley (Colorado Springs, USA) You get two parent units and a base unit that is housed in the baby's room. The great thing about the parent units is that they have an excellent range and also serve as a two-way radio, enabling parents out of earshot to talk with each other, or even talk to each other and the baby at the same time. This is particularly good for us as often one of us leaves the apartment to fetch the mail or visit the office, and this system allows us to stay in contact all of the time, in case either of us is needed.
The parent units are portable with belt clips and can be recharged, the base unit needs a power socket and has a fairly low profile, so it doesn't look too out of place. The styling of the units is rather basic, but they function very well, so this is more a product of function over form, rather than form over function. I did find that the controls were a little hard to handle at first, but I soon adapted and found them reasonable enough.
Stopped working after 3 months! July 27, 2010 Angela Ferrigno (Cromwell, CT) We bought this monitor around the first month our daughter was born (she's almost 5 months now). I did a lot of research online to try and find the right monitor and was willing to spend a little more money if I was going to get good quality. I read a bunch of reviews and wanted to find something that wasn't too expensive, but not only $20 either. This unit seemed to get a fair amount of good reviews and I liked the idea of being able to communicate between the two handheld units. My husband and I took advantage of this feature if I was in the nursery and he was downstairs and I needed another bottle or something. It was extremely convenient.
After just 1 use, one of the handheld units stopped working. Fortunately the other worked fine so I was able to still use it. I called customer service, and they were very helpful about the whole thing. They replaced the whole set for free, and the new one came in the mail a couple of weeks later. It's now about 3 months later and the whole base unit has stopped sending out a signal. Neither of the handheld units are picking anything up, so it's completely dead. I'm livid! I spent $80 on this thing, and I would not expect it to die in such a short period of time. I only just discovered this a little while ago after I finally got my daughter to sleep. Now I have to go to bed without a monitor, which means I will not be getting much sleep tonight.
I'm disgusted and appalled that a safety item such as this would be made so poorly, and the company would have the nerve to charge such a high price for it. Fortunately for me I already had ordered a video baby monitor as now that my daughter is becoming more active, I need a little more peace of mind at night than just the audio. This monitor will be arriving tomorrow according to the tracking. I just have to make it through tonight.
Save your money!
